PIERCE TOWNSHIP, Ohio (WKRC) - Four-year-old Edgar, a black retriever mix, was missing for a week before being found in a 12 inch drainage pipe.

Edgar’s owners Sean and Juli Ryan said Edgar and the other dog, Oscar, took off after a squirrel or some other animal. That night they searched the neighborhood but came back with nothing. It wasn’t until the next day, one of the dogs showed up at the house.

“In the morning I headed out to work and opened the garage door and there's Oscar but it's just Oscar,” said Ryan.

The Ryan’s said the dogs have taken off in the past but always come back together. As the days passed, there was no sight or sound of Edgar.

“We do all the things you do, put up signs, talk to people, spread the word, post online, call animal control, search every night,” said Ryan.

None of it was working. But then seven days after Ryan last saw his newly adopted dog he thought he heard him.

“Going through my head I’m thinking, ‘I hear it, nah,’ then I hear it again” said Ryan. “I think, ‘That can’t be Edgar.’”

The whining sound gets louder as Ryan approaches a drain pipe. He sticks his head down near the opening only to see his missing pal.

“He saw me and that's when he sounded the alarm, he started whaling and crying and then barking like, ‘Oh my gosh you're here,’" said Ryan.

Edgar couldn’t get out, he was stuck. So, Ryan did the only thing he thought to do, call 911. The fire department arrived and with a saw and began cutting the pipe.

"They exposed a little bit and he popped his head out, it was a tearful moment,” said Ryan. “He had goop on his eyes, he looked a mess."

Looking back at the week without Edgar, Ryan said he still can’t believe he walked past the pipe twice a day on walks with Oscar and never knew Edgar was stuck in the pipe. Health-wise Edgar is doing great. He was on some antibiotics and looks pretty banged up from being in the pipe for so long, but he was expected to make a full recovery.
